The showstopper

Within a heritage building restored by CaberlonCaroppi Studio, an opulent revived inner courtyard is now a lounge/bar known as the Dandy Café. Its high glass ceiling, letting in a burst of natural light, is a centre piece. While upstairs are 29 modern and stylish rooms and 18 longer-stay apartments designed with elegant 1950s touches, including wood panelling, Liberty wallpaper, splashes of colour, and contemporary artworks. .

The room

A sophisticated and minimalist room is elegantly furnished in muted natural tones – lots of brown shades set agains crisp white linen bedding and more of that solid wood panelling. Its large bathroom is a standout – with a spa like shower cum stream room that is marble lined and features a rain shower with sweet smelling bathroom products by Perfumer Luca Maffei.

Beyond the rooms

Ground floor Dandy Café is inspired by the eighteenth-century idea of a Literary Café. Here a Continental Breakfast is served within a modern and sophisticated dining space with cosy banquettes and mid-century armchairs, which serves a classic hotel menu (think pasta, fish dishes, salads, and burgers) all day. Next door is a more refined dining restaurant, the El Porteño Gourmet, serving Argentina cuisine. The roof terrace bar and café Terrace Flores are scheduled to open in the spring.

Dish to dine for

Steak at El Porteño Gourmet is the go-to. With the aromas and flavours of Argentina, the new restaurant boasts a cosmopolitan feel with its deep olive-green walls and blood-red drapes. It’s a cosy spot for either lunch or dinner. Start with Empanadas, oven-baked parcels filled with meat or spinach and cheese. Pasta dishes are minimal with the menu meat heavy – Argentinian beef fillet with Malbec and Chardonnay sauce, truffles on a plum cream an indulgent option.

Staying in

Umiltà 36 is best as an elegant sleepover as you have all of the Eternal City on your doorstep. Beyond the Dandy Café, El Porteño and soon to open Terrace Flores, there is also a state-of-the-art gymnasium.

Stepping out

Ask the Concierge team for dining tips – they  will happily arrange a booking for you at the finest establishments in Rome. With so much on your doorstep, time is your only hindrance.

The family factor

More for the cosmopolitan and independent traveller, the 17 apartments have a living room with a kitchenette, ideal for extended stays and for larger groups without forgoing comfort and style.

Before booking

Rome is a busy city, so if you are flexible enough, visiting the spring or autumn is the ideal time to truly enjoy the City’s many cultural charms.

Insiders’ tips

Breakfast is served in the ground floor Dandy Café with a buffet of homemade cakes and bread, cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, juices, and made-to-order coffee. Your room mini bar is filled with water and soft drinks, which are all complimentary.

If only

The rooftop bar, Terrace Flores, was open during my visit. Though happily, it will be welcoming guests when I next return. With 360 degrees city views and a lounge and Tapas bar, it promises to be the best new rooftop in Rome.

I wish I could take home

The stone mason who created the incredible shower rooms. Having a marble-clad steam shower would be my home’s ultimate luxury.
