The four toxin-free products you need to survive a long-haul flight

Australian brand Black Chicken Remedies has created a range of natural self-care products that are essentials for frequent flyers. Tina-Louise Jackson shares the travel-size quartet that is now taking up permanent residence in her carry-on.

A long-haul flight and a huge drop in temperature when you arrive at your destination are two of the perils of living so far from your home country. So, as I pack my case readying for my trip to the UK from my home in Sydney, I slip into my hand luggage a selection of travel-size Black Chicken Remedies to accompany me on my long journey west.

Using only the highest quality natural and organic ingredients, and no ‘nasties’ (a full list of ingredients is featured on each product), Chey Birch has created Black Chicken Remedies, with her first remedy being created in a little black chicken bowl on her dining room table in Bondi … if you were wondering about the name.

My companions from the range for this journey are:

Voyage Nasalette, a potent blend of aromatic essential oils including ginger, peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus and lemongrass in a handy size inhaler. Voyage is designed to bring calm, balance and clarity to your body and mind. While I’m not a nervous flyer, the few hours ahead of the flight – an early wake-up call, rushing around the house making sure we have everything we need for a two-week trip and a rush-hour journey to the airport – can have anyone’s nerves jangling, so simply holding the Voyage Nasalette below my nose to slowly inhale the aromas gives me a moment of ‘me’ time.

Hydrate My Face is blended with witch hazel, mandarin and grapefruit essential oils to create a toning mist that cools and hydrates. It’s great for keeping my skin moist during the flight, and a perfect wake-me-up as we near our final destination. I love the spray to this tonic: one spritz and my whole face is refreshed, without having to wave it around in the air to cover not only my face but also those of my travelling companions (although my husband loved it, too). Hydrate My Face is now a permanent fixture in my bag.

Dry Shampoo is always good to have handy, and this one is blended with bamboo to add lift and volume, rosemary and clary sage to nourish the scalp and hair follicles (again no nasties). A few quick shakes and my hair immediately looks and feels better than it did before.

Finally, and the real hero of this piece for me, is Respire Nasalette. Within 24 hours of landing in a rather grey and gloomy London, some 20 degrees cooler than when I stepped on the plane in Sydney, I’m showing the first signs of a cold. Respire Nasalette is a blend of pure, healing essential oils, including oregano, menthol, camphor, niaouli, peppermint, lemongrass, ginger, rosemary, eucalyptus, frankincense, thyme and clove bud. Once again, all this packed into a small inhaler, combining to create powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to soothe and clear the airways. It certainly does, and is my firm companion over the next few days as my cold develops. Note to self: use this during the flight to help prevent, rather than cure.

With many products in the range offered in mini size, as well as a handy and ready-to-go Travel Skincare Kit, Black Chicken Remedies make a perfect travel companion, wherever you’re heading on your next journey.
