Tesla customers can now buy the electric vehicles with bitcoin.
Founder Elon Musk announced the news in a Tweet on Wednesday.
The change will take place immediately in the United States. Australian buyers will have to wait until later this year.
Musk’s Tweet has been retweeted more than 100,000 times and has 726,000 likes.
Telsa bought $US1.5 billion worth of bitcoin in February, a move which sent the prince of crypto-currency soaring.
On Wednesday the bitcoin price rose again, up more than 4 per cent.
Musk said crypto-currency paid to Telsa would not be converted into traditional currency.
One Australian dollar is worth $69,243.33 Australian dollars on Thursday.
The move has taken many people by surprise.
However, Tesla did raise the adoption of bitcoin as a possibility in their Q4 2020 10-K SEC filings .
“We expect to begin accepting bitcoin as a form of payment for our products in the near future, subject to applicable laws and initially on a limited basis, which we may or may not liquidate upon receipt,” the document reads.

When buying a Tesla you need to scan the QR code and copy and paste the address into your bitcoin wallet.
