Sustainable fashion: Barrique Design debuts watches handcrafted from French oak wine barrels
The idea to create watches made out of previously used French oak wine barrels was born in a little town in Austria by a young sommelier, Josef Schuch, who was looking for a present for his uncle, a huge wine lover. The young restaurant owner wanted to buy him a watch for his birthday that combined his passion for wine; the brainstorming began. After putting wine barrels up for decoration in his restaurant, the vision came to him – a wine watch handcrafted out of oak wine barrels. With that, he contacted the team at Barrique Design and their unique collection of timepieces was born.
Over time, the Barrique collection grew and now features 24 unique and sustainable watches crafted from Allier oak barrels. After aging wines in Europe, Africa and Australia, these reclaimed barrels are transformed by international watch manufacturers to create stylish, wine-inspired timepieces.
The latest offering in the Barrique collection is the Barrique Apple Watch Band, a design that seamlessly melds the history of French oak wine barrels with the top-of-the-range technology that Apple is known for. Featuring a slingshot clasp and stainless steel finished in black gunmetal, the sustainable strap fits all Apple watches and is offered in band widths of 22 and 24 millimetres.
The Barrique Apple Watch Band will be available for keen customers from the Vinotive Store in 2020.
