Canada’s massive ski resort has something for all five-star travellers.
Australian powder hounds can’t get enough of Whistler Blackcomb, the largest ski resort in North America. The twin mountain peaks give you 3,307 hectares of snowy terrain to play in, covering everything from friendly beginner runs to tree runs, thigh-burning groomers and steep alpine bowls. And with an average snowfall of more than 11 metres per year and a season lasting nearly 200 days, there’s plenty of the good stuff to go around.
Getting around the mountains is now easier than ever with owner Vail Resorts investing more than $50million in lift system improvements. The three new and upgraded lifts will reduce lift lines and increase access across the resort. On Blackcomb Mountain, the old Wizard and Solar chairs have been replaced with a 10-passenger gondola that terminates just next to the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, while the Catskinner triple has been replaced by a high-speed quad. Over on Whistler Mountain, the four-passenger Emerald Express chair has been superseded by a swish new six-passenger lift to get you up the mountain faster and exploring an even wider swathe of terrain.
Off the slopes, Whistler’s bustling pedestrian-only village is the place to be. With more than 90 restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs to choose from, it’s hardly a surprise that Whistler’s après-ski scene is legendary. By day, indulge in some retail therapy at some of the 200-plus boutiques, spend an afternoon on the ice-skating rink or get a whole new perspective on the mountains with a ziplining tour. Don’t miss the weekly Fire & Ice show, held every Sunday between December and March at the height of the season, for a thrilling extravaganza of fireworks, music and daredevil athletes flipping through flaming rings.
