A smaller airline it may be, but Hawaiian Airlines is serious about getting you in the island mood well before you arrive in the Pacific paradise. With its premium cabin featuring all-new lay-flat business class seating with the smallest details of design and offerings all inspired by the Aloha state.

Business Class features 18 lie-flat leather seats that fold into 180-degree beds in a configuration of 2-2-2.

The seat

Hawaiian Airlines’ signature 180-degree lay-flat seat was created in collaboration with Italian aerospace design firm Optimares and is finished in Italian leather. Rather than an array of buttons to hit the desired position, these seats are controlled by a single intuitive control wheel that converts the seat to a bed, along with premium bedding designed by Hawaiian designer Sig Zane.

The seats are 52 centimetres wide and 193 centimetres long in bed mode with ample storage spaces for shoes and electronics. I enjoyed dual USB points and AC power.

The dining & service

Pre-departure, Hawaiian Airlines serves its signature Mai Tai. Business Class service also includes a premier cocktail and full beverage bar service offering wines selected by Hawaiian’s master sommelier Chuck Furuya, local craft beer and Hawaiimade spirits. Hawaiian’s executive chef Chai Chaowasaree showcases regional cuisine presented on custom-crafted dinnerware, linens and trays.

Hawaiian hospitality starts the moment you step on board

The entertainment

An advanced inflight entertainment system with over 100 hours of movies and TV is powered by a 33-centimetre wide-screen tablet resting on an adjustable telescoping arm for optimal viewing angle and comfort.

The lounge

The Plumeria Lounge is a basic business lounge with modest offerings.

The glam factor

I found the Hawaiian Airline business class experience less about the glam-factor and more about the ‘welcome and relax’ factor. I experienced genuine and personal attention, service and friendliness from the business check-in desk to the onboard hospitality. Hawaiian Airlines business class is the antidote to austere opulence in favour of genuine warmth and hospitality.
