The concept

InterContinental Perth City Centre is bound to be a contemporary classic, recently opened in October 2017 and featuring some of the most elegant new additions to the InterContinental Hotels Group legacy. Surrounded by high-end retail such as Chanel, Gucci, and Tiffany & Co. in the coveted King Street Precinct, its architecture and interior is a unique testament to its West Australian home, with local touches fused with exemplary global design and hospitality accomplishments. Designed by one of the world’s leading interior design studios, Chada, elegant ambience resounds from the lobby through to the suites, accompanied by an exhibition of some of Western Australia’s finest artists in an array of over 400 sculptures, paintings, ceramics and glass works. The building’s exterior preserves the heart of the building’s heritage, yet expands into the realm of modern luxury with a gold-pleated ribbon façade which complements its iconic neighbour, His Majesty’s Theatre.

First impressions

The entrance and lobby are designed to showcase the sleek, modern visions of Chada Interior Design, and although impressive in their splendour, are softened by the warm welcome and etiquette of professional and friendly staff. A collaborative piece by glass artisan Gerry Reilly and Woods Bagot’s Eva Sue, Forrest Drift creates a focal point of the lobby entrance; the piece is a dramatic suspended sculpture crafted with 76 hand-blown glass leaves, reflecting the changing seasons of the beautiful West Australian landscape.

The room

Décor is a highlight at InterContinental Perth, with locally-sourced timber and stone accenting the area’s natural heritage and colour schemes of taupe, olive and bronze hues that echo the surrounding ocean and bushland. This is contrasted by views over Perth’s city scape, provided by tall windows which allowed prolific natural light into a spacious, contemporary living space. The King room also boasts a walk-in rain shower equipped with luxury amenities, while high-speed WiFi, a Nespresso machine and in-room bar only further contribute to the fulsome comfort provided by its elegant furnishing.

On my plate

The hotel offers a charming allocation of complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and evening canapes each day to their Club InterContinental guests. However, its most extravagant cuisine can be found in the collection of restaurants and bars inside the hotel.

Beneath the gold façade on the hotel’s streetscape, Heno & Rey is an upscale reinterpretation of tapas specialising in locally-sourced seafood which is accompanied by sangria on tap and a thoughtfully curated collection of local wines.

In a more trendy, modern tone, guests can kick-start their morning in the food-truck concept eatery Graffiti, whose street-art style roller door tends fresh coffee and delicious gourmet-to-go. However, my personal favourite is The Loft Lounge, which is perched on the hotel’s first floor on a stylish al fresco terrace, showcasing views of the heritage buildings of King Street. This is a perfect place to enjoy morning pastries, high tea in the afternoon or evening cocktails.

Spa life

Although the InterContinental Perth doesn’t have its own on-grounds spa experience, their helpful concierge ensured a booking for me at Endota Spa, with whom the hotel has a partnership guaranteeing its guests a 15% discount on any of its luxury treatments. The Intense Radiance treatment left me rejuvenated and fresh-faced after having been treated to a glycolic peel and deep hydration mask. Light Therapy, said to stimulate collagen and elastin production, rendered my skin almost unrecognisable with a fresh radiance, and I left feeling calm and carefree.

Stepping out

The desirable location offers luxury retail with convenience on Perth’s King Street Precinct, neighbouring fashion icons such as Chanel, Gucci, and Prada. Nearby, Kings Park and Botanic Garden and Elizabeth Quay make for amusing day trips filled with colourful natural beauty, theatres and museums.

The Signature Factor

The InterContinental Perth is set apart by its lush décor and architecture and upscale retail surrounds. Views of Perth’s heritage district incite a feeling of timeless class, brought to life by the cafes and theatres hidden within. The hotel’s own restaurants and bars embody a unique amalgamation of the exclusive and the inclusive, with its expertly crafted dining experiences open to guests and locals alike and boasting fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.
