In a world seemingly full of modern design, skyscrapers and minimalism, Treasury on Collins mixes old with new, beautifully preserving the history of this eight-storey neo-classical building, which once housed the Bank of Australasia, while creating comfortable living and working spaces for long or short stays – the perfect choice for those who prefer the convenience of apartment-style accommodation.
Situated in the heart of the CBD, on the corner of Collins and Queen Streets, I’m from plane to hotel room in just under an hour. The Melbourne streets are still buzzing as I enter the heritage-listed building from the Collins Street entrance. Although dark outside, I’m immediately taken by the vastness of the main entrance area, once part of the Banking Chamber, with its magnificent ceiling and gilt-encrusted coving. It’s easy to close your eyes and imagine the chamber humming with the activity of a busy banking day during the Bank of Australasia’s 98 years of operation here. Check-in is swift and efficient and I’m in my Heritage King Loft Apartment, situated on the third floor, in no time.
The suite is a huge duplex-style apartment with a well-equipped kitchenette (with that all-important Nespresso machine), dining and lounge area, and a convenient downstairs bathroom. Up a flight of stairs you find a galleried bedroom with a roomy king-size bed and a large bathroom with shower, spa bath and Molton Brown toiletries. A large window, almost the size of both floors, allows light to flood in during the daytime, and there are plenty of mirrors to ensure you look great from all angles before heading out to enjoy the city. For those with longer stays, there’s a washer and dryer in the bathroom also.
Lucky me, I was in it. However, for a family or those looking for more space there is a two-bedroom Heritage King Suite, spreading out over 85 square metres.

While Treasury on Collins doesn’t have its own restaurant, a buffet-style breakfast is served on the mezzanine floor each morning, complimentary for guests booking direct, and each afternoon from 4-6pm it offers Wine Down – complimentary Tahbilk wine and snacks in a relaxed setting overlooking the Banking Chamber. For those looking for a more substantial feed, the aptly named The Bank on Collins, situated in the central banking chamber, offers up tasty modern pub fare, without having to take a step outside.
Highlights from the mini-bar
The room has no mini-bar, although it does have a full-size fridge and kitchen area, should you wish to prepare something for yourself. Instead, the mezzanine offers complimentary soft drinks, tea and coffee, snacks and bottled water all day long for guests.
I wish I could take home…
The zebra-striped armchair in the corner of my room and the spacious feeling throughout the entire hotel.
With the amount of space my Heritage King Loft Apartment offers it feels like a real home from home complete with complimentary Netflix, giving me time to catch up on my favourite shows (always best served with no kids and a glass of wine I feel). In my bedroom there is also a Rubik’s cube for those inclined. The incentive a complimentary bottle of wine for those who manage to solve it (it’s not long before I realise the solution to this particular conundrum isn’t in my skillset and I’ll just have to buy the wine myself). There is also a two’s up paddle, perhaps a nod to the historic past of the building.
Situated in the heart of the city, trams and trains are all close by to explore Melbourne day or night. Within walkable distance is the Melbourne Convention Centre for those visiting for an event, the pretty Yarra River and SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium if you have kids in tow. For a quaint coffee fix, head round the corner to Bank Place – a laneway running between Collins and Little Collins Street, featuring buildings dating from the 1860s, heritage lampposts and bluestone alleys. With several cafes with street seating, it’s a great place to sit a while and watch the world go by.
