The ultimate summer experience is about to take over Sydney Harbour

The world’s most exciting race on water will take over Sydney Harbour on December 17 and 18.

SailGP sees eight rival nations go head to head, racing at speeds of up to 100km an hour in identical F50 catamarans.

This is not a race of who’s boat is the biggest, but a test of the sailor’s skill, strategy and ability to work as a team.

SailGP is high tech, high drama and high action.

Spectators can customise their viewing to their needs and desires with options for island parties, luxury harbour cruises, behind the scenes tours and more.

Sydneysiders have waited a long time for freedom. And this could just be the harbour city’s ultimate way to celebrate.

What is SailGP?

SailGP is adrenaline-fueled racing and one of the best sporting events on the planet.

The competition begins with eight teams vying for points in fleet races across the globe. After each race, SailGP adds each teams’ points to a leaderboard.

The top three teams make it to the final where the winner takes home $1 million. This year’s finalists will be determined at the Grand Final in San Francisco, the next event following Sydney.

‘A spectacular sight’

The Sydney event is the seventh round of SailGP Season 2 and it will feature national teams from Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United States of America.

The world’s best athletes, including Australian Olympic gold medalist and Season 1 Champion Tom Slingsby have all signed on to compete in what is expected to be a thrilling race.

This event will be a grudge match. Slingsby lost to Ben Ainslie’s British team in Sydney last year and he’s keen to get revenge.

“Having eight F50’s lined up and racing on Sydney Harbour is going to be a pretty spectacular sight for fans and with the calibre of sailors we have on these boats this year, we can expect action-packed racing,” Slingsby said.

“We’re focused on winning the event for Australia in front of a home crowd.”

How to watch the Australia Sail Grand Prix, Sydney

SailGP will showcase the best Sydney Harbour has to offer, with close, heart-stopping racing and an extensive range of free and ticketed spectator experiences both on and off-water – all in front of a spectacular backdrop.

Shark Island packages offer premium front row viewing as the F50s circle the island throughout the race. This exclusive event space will have big screens for action replays, live race commentary, DJs and an open bar. Plus, every ticket includes a gourmet picnic hamper.

If you want an even more exclusive option, the Team Base Tours offer behind the scenes access to the SailGP Team Bases on White Bay.  This is a rare chance to see SailGP’s wing sailed boats up close as the teams prepare for battle.

SailGP spectator boat

If you’d prefer to watch the race from the water, you can book your spot on an official SailGP spectator boat. The open-top Captain Cook cruises offer an incredible view of the racing from inside the public exclusion zone, together with live race commentary.

Fans can also charter an adrenaline yacht or bring their own boat.

Register your own boat via SailGP.com/Sydney to receive live updates from race management including racecourse position and race timings to help you get the best position on the water.

No matter how you choose to watch, SailGP promises to be the event that celebrates Sydney’s return to freedom. Secure your tickets before they sell out.
