Ovolo Melbourne facts

Room: The Boogie Room
Address: 234 Toorak Rd, South Yarra VIC 3141
Date: April 2021
Best for: Urban couples wanting a unique stay that offers them a quintessential contemporary Melbourne experience.

The Signature factor

The Ovolo South Yarrais bold, creative and unpredictable. It takes design cues from the days of disco, rock gods and retro glamour.

At every turn, guests will find a surprise that elevates their experience and makes for an unforgettable stay.

The concept

Ovolo South Yarra is the latest addition to Ovolo’s designer hotel collection. It blends past, present and progressive in Melbourne’s cultural precinct.

Girish Jhunjhnuwala, Ovolo Group founder, said of the hotel’s debut: “Ovolo South Yarra is ready to deliver an extraordinary hotel experience embodying Ovolo’s philosophy of connecting with its guests emotionally.”

“Complimenting the local cultural scene through art, design and a unique restaurant concept.”

First impressions

Walking through the doors of Ovolo South Yarra you immediately know this is not your average hotel.

The lobby walls are decorated with pop art and the room is centred around a neon fireplace with red and orange flue.

It’s the place where modern luxury and retrofuturism mix to explore the nostalgia of past eras.

Check-in is simple – just approach the friendly hotel staff who stand behind a mighty concrete reception desk that’s worth the weight of two elephants.

The room

I stayed in the aptly named ‘Boogie Room’ on the sixth and top floor of the hotel. It’s a micro-room perfect for business trips and intimate stays but considering its tiny label it’s really quite generous. The room is 25 square metres, has a king bed and a bathroom with a shower.

Turns out Ovolo Hotels didn’t splurge all their design budget on the lobby – the rooms are just as impressive.

In keeping with the retro theme, there’s a bold graphic feature wall. It’s offset by an arched bedhead with an even groovier geometric print. Round pendant lights that resemble disco balls drop from the ceiling on either side of the bed.

Even though the hotel’s style takes a nod to the 70s they’ve seamlessly integrated modern technology into the room. It’s got Chromecast, Bose Bluetooth speakers, a 55” 4K UHD Smart TV and superspeed Wi-Fi.

Ovolo has thought of everything for the modern traveller. The room features under-bed storage, hanging racks, multiple USB and international plug sockets, a hairdryer and an in-room water station to hydrate guests while reducing plastic waste.

The room is full of personal touches such as the loot bag you’ll find on your bed upon entry. Mine had a yoga mat, cap and umbrella (suitable for unpredictable Melbourne weather).

My personal favourite was the free mini-bar decked out with Deakin Estate wines and Moondog Lagers. Plus a little goodie bag of late-night snacks.

Once you’ve reached the bottom of the goodie bag and you want to indulge further, simply reach for the room service menu, appropriately titled ‘Don’t Get Up’ and available from 11am to 10pm.

Choose from small nibbles such as fried olives or pickles or select something more indulgent such as a club sandwich or classic smash burger.

The top suite

Ovolo South Yarra has nine different room types, including the Rockstar Suites. Two suites are dedicated to the golden era’s most famed lyrical lovers, ‘Sonny & Cher’ and ‘John & Yoko’.

Stay in either suite to add a little extra flair to your stay. Their design is a suitable tribute to the rock gods, featuring original art by renowned street artist Mr. Brainwash.

The 44-square-metre Rockstar Suites include all the usual amenities plus more. Enjoy the extra space with the double vanity bathroom, sofa bed and sitting area with coffee table and your own personal cocktail bar.

On my plate

Lona Misa is Ovolo South Yarra’s in-house vegan restaurant. It’s the first of its kind to pop up in the trendy inner suburb of Melbourne.

Renowned Melbourne chefs Shannon Martinez (Smith & Daughters, Smith & Daughters Deli) and Ian Curley (French Saloon, Kirk’s Wine Bar) spearheaded the hotel restaurant. They offer a European-Latin fusion fine and bistro dining experience that celebrates locally sourced ingredients.

The menu offers an experience that is full of flavour and surprises. See our full review of Lona Misa.

A basement level within the Ovolo South Yarra Hotel offers an edgy space event space to host corporate functions. The space can cater for serious meetings, group Yoga or a movie night.

It’s also just a great place to unwind and rewind to your 70s self. There’s arcade games, a pool table and a lightup dancefloor.
