Watch: New Zealand will be waiting for you when this is all over
Listen to the crashing waves, the birds in the trees and the sounds of the wind in Visit Auckland’s remarkable new video.
New Zealand has topped tourist’s buckets lists for decades. And while you may not be white water rafting in Queenstown or hiking among the misty mountains of Milford Sound in your immediate future, that doesn’t mean you can’t check out the Land of the Long White Cloud’s incredible scenery in the meantime… virtually, that is.
Visit Auckland, part of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development, has released a stunning video celebrating what makes this region so special – which has been viewed over 650,000 times across different platforms since it’s launch just over a week ago.
Named Papatūānuku is breathing – the Maori word for Mother Earth – all the photography and video for the short film was shot before the COVID-19 crisis, while the voiceover was recorded by 11-year-old Manawanui Maniapoto Mills at his Muriwai home during the country’s lockdown and features haunting taonga pūoro (traditional Māori instrumental sounds) by Moana and the Moahunters, including the putaatara (opening conch shell sound), the purerehua (wind sound) and the kōauau (Māori flute sound at the end).
The footage has resonated with both Kiwi residents and international travellers staying safe at home – so much so that the video has been translated into French and Spanish by inspired viewers.
The central message of the video is that the beauty, stillness and wonders of New Zealand are waiting for you and until you can travel once more, just listen.
A number of destinations around the world have created showcase videos amid the COVID-19 crisis, so that people can travel the world virtually and feel inspired for future plans, including Tahiti Tourisme’s Tahiti Comes To You and Visit Monaco’s Monaco MISS YOU.
