Why this Indigenous art centre should be on your itinerary in 2021
Established in 1995, Lockhart River Arts Centre is a prominent Indigenous art centre located on the Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland.
It brings together the works of 26 registered artists, including Silas Hobson, Patrick Butcher Jnr, Rosella Namok, Fiona Omeenyo, Irene Namok and Josiah Omeenyo, some of whom were recognised both at home and abroad as ‘The Art Gang’ in the 1990s. Lockhart River Arts Centre presents a blend of contemporary works with individual styles that capture rich cultural heritage and generational, ancestral and personal life stories of sea, river and landscape.
Lockhart River Arts Centre has successfully exhibited its Indigenous artists in both solo and group exhibitions across the country, including at Parliament House and National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, plus in more far-flung destinations, from Noumea, New Caledonia, to Ljubljana, Slovenia, and from Ewha University in Seoul, South Korea, to Columbus State University in Georgia, USA.
Between June and October 2018, Lockhart River artists’ works were exhibited in a permanent collection at Foundation Burkhardt-Felder Arts et Culture’s Musée de l’art aborigène australien “La grange” in Switzerland. The exhibition – entitled Islands in the Sea – included paintings from artists Silas Hobson, Irene Namok, Patrick Butcher Jnr and Fiona Omeenyo.
In Australia, Lockhart River Artworks can be purchased from Art Mob Aboriginal Fine Art Gallery in Hobart; Art Atrium Gallery in Sydney; Suzanne O’Connell Gallery in Brisbane Japingka Gallery in Fremantle; KickArts Contemporary Gallery Cairns; Sandra Bardas Art Gallery at Worawa Aboriginal College, Victoria. Overseas, collections can be found at Booker Lowe Gallery in Houston, Texas, and Arts d’Australie in Paris.
