Traveller: Rheanne Scott
Room: LM Club Room
Address: 81 Boulevard Gouvion-Saint-Cyr, Paris, 75017
Date: August/September 2016
Best for: Modern luxury and comfort for leisure and business travellers in the heart of the City of Lights.
The ultra-modern Le Méridien Etoile is ideal for a Paris break for leisure or business, offering an ideal location in the heart of the city, luxurious touches and modern comforts.
The Signature factor
Sometimes the Signature factor means the hotel has gone above and beyond to consider the entire experience of its guests beyond the walls of its building.
In addition to being beautifully newly renovated, Le Méridien Etoile offers guests its UNLOCK ART program, which provides complimentary access to the Palais de Tokyo, a large architectural gem focused on contemporary creative arts, one of the largest institutions in Europe. It regularly features exciting new exhibitions featuring a range of contemporary art. The terrace is a wonderful place to enjoy a glass of wine after seeing the art as it has an incredible view of the Eiffel Tower. The UNLOCK ART partnership features various initiatives which are continuously changing, such as new art exhibitions, private viewings, and meetings with artists.
Originally built in 1972 by Air France (and featuring an Air France shuttle to Charles De Gaulle Airport), Le Méridien Etoile has just finished a major renovation to its property in September. Fantastically located minutes from the famous Champs-Elysées and Arc du Triomphe in the 17th arrondissement, it is the perfect spot for both leisure and business travellers to Paris. Featuring 1025 guest rooms, of which 22 are suites, this hotel is a great spot to base yourself. It’s across the road from the Paris Convention Centre (Palais des Congrès de Paris) and is a 10-minute Métro ride from La Défense, Paris business district, making it ideal for business travellers. With the Porte Maillot Métro station being a few minutes from the doorstep of the hotel, it’s easy to get around the city quickly and easily.
The lobby, guest rooms and suites were designed by Jean-Philippe Nuel, featuring tones of greys, whites, lovely touches of art and an overall feeling of Parisian cool. Rooms feature flat screen televisions with satellite connections, free Wi-Fi and high-speed internet, an in-room safe, air conditioning (key for escaping the Parisian summer heat) and hair dryer.
You’ve got concierge, room service and reception available 24 hours a day, as well as the business centre. You also have some great options for relaxing at the hotel, whether enjoying dinner at Ma Chère & Tendre steakhouse restaurant, enjoying a coffee in the newly decorated and comfortable lounge, or a cocktail at the Jazz Club Etoile. Keep up with your exercise routine by using the hotel’s fitness centre, or completely relax by indulging in the in-room spa menu options!
As you arrive at the hotel, you’ll get glimpses of the Arc du Triomphe, the large Palais des Congrès, and beautiful Parisian architecture on the streets surrounding the hotel. The newly renovated lobby designed by Jean-Philippe Nuel is ultra-modern, with a bright interior, large comfortable sofas and chairs, a large flatscreen featuring various works of art on a rotating basis, and a space-age dramatic sculpture dominating the room.
A long, sleek row of reception desks are tucked to the left side of the main lobby, where check-in is swift and welcoming, getting your stay off to a great start.
Prior to arriving, I had a welcome email from Le Méridien Etoile’s concierge, a nice perk that comes with having SPG Platinum Status and goes the distance with customer service. Having platinum status enabled me to have an upgrade to the new LM Club Room. Although my room was quite small, it was beautifully and tastefully decorated to offer a comfortable stay with plenty of closet space and drawers to store belongings.
My comfortable bed featured plush white bedding against a feature wall, which reminded me of an interpretation of a map of Paris. A small desk is there for any work you may need to do if you’re a business traveller.
There is a separate toilet room beside the modern bathroom featuring a deep tub and shower. One of my favourite things about the bathroom was the Malin and Goetz toiletries offered. I always look at the toiletries a hotel offers when I check into my room, as it is a good indicator of style and quality. The offering of Malin and Goetz toiletries demonstrates Le Méridien’s focus on chic, high-quality products.
The real showstopper, though, was the view. From one angle, you have a view of Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur, and to your right stands the Eiffel Tower. Sunrise was gorgeous to see, rising above the hills of Montmartre, illuminating the city in a warm pink and orange light. You can watch the Eiffel Tower change throughout the day in different types of light throughout the day, with sunset being beautiful in the way it made the tower and surrounding rooftops glow. But it was best at night, when you can curl up in your slippers and cosy bathrobe, and watch the Eiffel Tower glitter for five minutes on the hour each hour at night. Just perfect!
You can relax with watching one of the 100-plus channels available on your flatscreen television or catch up with social media on your free Wi-Fi. With club access, you can use the LM Club Lounge, which offers complimentary continental breakfast, all day refreshments, and French cheeses and wines between 7pm to 9pm.
Le Méridien Etoile’s top suite is the Presidential Suite. This spacious 93-square-metre two-bedroom suite features views over Paris. It provides guests with options, with the second bedroom being ideal for families, or entertaining in the living room area with its sofa, leather armchairs, four-seat dining table and three televisions. Each room offers king-size signature LM beds and plush linens, and armchairs to lounge in and enjoy the view. There are also two modern ensuite bathrooms for comfort. A refreshment area is offered, stocked with various snacks, beverages and complimentary bottled water. Late check-out is offered (4pm), which is always a nice perk if you aren’t leaving the city until later in the day, as well as unlimited free internet, turndown service and a discount to the hotel’s restaurant.
A work area with desk, high-speed internet and speaker phone is also provided, ideal for business visitors.
On my plate
Paris offers some of the best cuisine in the world, with hundreds of restaurants available throughout the city. If you’re looking to stay close to the hotel, Le Méridien offers Ma Chère & Tendre steakhouse restaurant, which offers its patrons fine cuts of meat and a broad selection of wine to enjoy.
In the evening, check out Jazz Club Etoile, which has come to be known as one of the best places in Paris to enjoy jazz, featuring some of the best musicians including BB King, Cab Calloway and Lionel Hampton. Enjoy a cocktail and some live music before turning in at the end of the night.
In the morning, enjoy the hotel’s breakfast buffet, or, if you’re in a hurry, the hotel offers fresh pastries and coffees from the ‘Street Corner’ in the lobby.
I wish I could take home…
The spectacular view of the Eiffel Tower from my room. There was nothing better than to gaze out the window and admire it, especially at night when it sparkles at the top of each hour, from your perfect vantage point.
In place of offering a fixed spa, Le Méridien Etoile uniquely provides its guest with its In-Room Spa services, so that you can indulge in the comfort of your own room. Services are provided by monmasseur Paris, and the menu offers a small range of massages to enjoy.
If you feel like relaxing at the hotel, you can indulge in a massage treatment in the comfort of your own room, or work out at the hotel’s fitness centre. Try the hotel’s restaurant, Ma Chere & Tendre, open throughout the day, or check out the jazz club for some live music and cocktails.
If you have Club Access, you can take advantage of complimentary refreshments and snacks throughout the day while catching up on the news or social media with free Wi-Fi.
If you need to work during your stay, there is a business centre available 24 hours a day.
Paris is one of the most incredible cities in the world, with countless things to do and experience whether you enjoy theatre, the opera, fine dining, shopping, art, history, or anything else your heart desires.
In the immediate area surrounding the hotel, you’ve got the Champs-Elysées minutes away to indulge in glamorous shopping (and in the adjacent streets), climb the Arc du Triomphe for beautiful views over Paris, or check out the Fondation Louis Vuitton, a stunning building and contemporary gallery designed by legendary architect Frank Gehry. Just across the road from the hotel is Les Boutiques du Palais, which is one of the largest and best department stores in Paris. Check out the Palais de Tokyo and take advantage of the complimentary access provided to you by the hotel.
You’ve got the Porte Maillot Métro on your doorstep, though, that can take you to other parts of the city easily and quickly. Take a stroll through the Jardin des Tuileries or Jardin des Plantes. Stop for coffee at Café Kitsuné in the Jardin du Palais Royal. Explore the Marais and its wonderful independent shops, restaurants (such as Le Mary Celeste), or pop into the newly renovated Musée Picasso. Head to the chic Saint-Germain neighbourhood, stopping for lunch and people watching at Café de Flore or Les Deux Magots, followed by shopping at the legendary Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche department store. Visit the lovely Musée Rodin for a beautiful, bitesize art experience, or take on the enormously impressive Musée du Louvre or Musée d’Orsay. Head to Montmartre for a feel of classic Paris and incredible views of the city from the steps of the Sacré-Cœur. Indulge in Parisian desserts at Angelina or the famous Ladurée. For spectacular views of the Eiffel Tower, head to the platform at Trocadéro early in the morning with a cappuccino in hand, followed by wandering down through the Champ de Mars. Or, just simply let yourself get lost by strolling along the Seine and through the wonderful, winding streets of Paris enjoying the beauty of this city.
Try and get a room that offers a view of the Eiffel Tower. Nothing beats being able to gaze out at this stunning landmark from the comfort of your own room.
Le Méridien Etoile is SPG affiliated, so be sure to use your points and any status you have earned to take advantage of its perks.
