Kachi Lodge opens on Bolivia’s salt flats
This new stargazer lodge in Bolivia is the closest guests will come to sleeping on the Moon.
The first and only accommodation within the Uyuni Salt Flats is now welcoming visitors. Kachi Lodge is as remarkable as its surroundings: a never-ending stretch of striated salt crusts shadowed by the jagged backdrop of the Tunupa volcano.
Set against this lunar-like landscape, the futuristic domes look like a surreal space station and, at an altitude of 3,600 metres, were designed for optimal stargazing with transparent panels providing unobstructed night sky views. Expert on-site guides are available to educate guests on constellations, Andean cosmology and ancient cultural theories about the night sky.
Each of the six geodesic white pods feature plush but minimalist furniture, private bathroom, heating and clear views of the striking topography. All are connected by raised wooden platforms, to both protect the ground beneath and to ensure easy access during wet season. Built to have minimal environmental impact, the lodge implements closed-loop water treatment systems to reduce consumption and relies entirely upon solar energy,
Food is from an offshoot of La Paz’s award-winning Gustu, served in the larger central dome known as The Lodge, where a long wooden table is designed for leisurely communal dinners. Diners can watch dusk turn into night through the clear ‘wall’, grab a telescope to take a closer look or simply unwind on the oversized hemp cushions in the adjacent lounge area for a nightcap.
Despite the isolated location, guests can partake in numerous activities – rise with the sun and explore the giant-cacti covered island nearby, hike to the lower tip of the volcano crater, watch the locals collect their salts from the surrounding Salar, bike around the expansive flats or during wet season, paddleboard through the flooded plains.
