It is no secret that the city of Beppu, located on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, is a paradise for onsen holidays, host to more than 2,400 natural springs and visited by more than four million people annually. A long-time favourite with locals, the up-and-coming destination is preparing to take centre stage when the Rugby World Cup rolls around in September.
Opening its doors on 1 August 2019, ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa is the first international luxury resort in the Oita Prefecture. The opening follows on from the successful launch of InterContinental Osaka, and blends the traditional Japanese spa experience with the hallmarks of InterContinental accommodation and service.
Design meets nature
The resort has embraced its local surrounds in the design process. Each of the 89 guest rooms includes a bamboo feature created by local artists and craftsmen, complemented by a spacious layout and use of natural materials. In the Suites and Club Rooms, a selection of open-air baths on the terraces adds an extra element of peace and relaxation.
The Gallery, a nature-inspired meetings and events space, boasts mesh ceilings with woven rattan, pillars made of traditional Japanese paper and carpeting featuring a motif inspired by wisps of steam swirling above Beppu’s famous hot springs.
Hot spring heritage
Japan’s hot spring heritage underpins the guest experience, from the indoor public bath with the beautifying properties of Myoban-no-Yu and Biyu-no-Yu and a heated infinity pool with breathtaking views to a luxury spa offering revitalising treatments and locally inspired remedies.
As a complement to the world-class spa experience on offer, a variety of restaurants and bars graces the top floor of the resort. Divided into a relaxed dining room and an exclusive counter seating-only atelier, Elements – Atelier & Bar offers a range of seasonal dishes using locally sourced ingredients.
To celebrate the upcoming opening, InterContinental has announced three accommodation packages:
