The Signature factor
Hotel Pleta de Mar has, not one, but two of the most epic pool scenes we’ve ever laid eyes on. Surrounded by lush green grass and ivory-coloured Balinese daybeds, the first pool is near the main restaurant and bar. This pool’s jewel-like turquoise water shimmers under the Spanish sun, while the deep blue Mediterranean sparkles in the distance. Here, you are just steps away from a delicious lunch at the restaurant or a refreshing cocktail at the bar’s pergola-covered terrace.
Equally jaw-dropping, Pleta de Mar’s second pool sits down by to the sea. Follow the gravel path downhill to the navy infinity pool – whimsically carved into the wooded cliffside. Tiered levels of daybeds rise from and surround the setting, creating a stunning amphitheatre-like effect. As if these two pools weren’t enough, a third tranquil little dipping pool can be found in spa garden.
The newest addition to the Torre de Canyamel Luxury Hotels Group, Pleta de Mar is located directly alongside its established sister property, Can Simoneta. Both hotels are centuries-old private estates that have been transformed into exclusive, boutique luxury retreats. Not only were many of the original buildings kept, but much of the rugged natural landscape remains as well. Pleta de Mar’s check-in building is housed in the estate’s original stables. Now, the long-standing stone exterior gives way to a fresh, refined-rustic interior with massive windows and modern art hanging on the walls. Limestone facades and rustic charm define the hotel’s design throughout, but the inside spaces reflect a light and airy minimalist appeal, allowing nature and the innate beauty of Mallorca to take centre stage.
From feathered grass dancing in the wind to wise old olive trees, it’s the seamless blend of nature and luxury that first strikes you upon arrival at Pleta de Mar. While bellmen whisk your bags to your room, the concierge leads you down a trellis-covered walkway, draped in vibrant fuchsia flowers, to the bar’s outdoor terrace. Enjoy a refreshing welcome cocktail, kick off your sandals and smell the sea breeze; it’s not hard to begin relaxing right away.
Even the smallest bungalows are spacious at Pleta de Mar. We stayed in the Concierge Suite, where you walk through a private gate into a cactus garden courtyard upon entering. Stepping through the front door, a raised foyer area looks down at an open bedroom and living room below. Off to the side, a small hallway leads to a spacious closet area and massive bathroom. Almost comparable in size to our New York City apartment, the bathroom boasts a deep white soaking tub, indoor rain shower and private outdoor shower. Throughout the entire space, natural tones create a simple yet chic ambiance that feels modern, fresh and airy. Off the back of the bungalow, open the sliding glass doors and glide through the fluttering white drapes to find a private outdoor terrace.
The grand suite is essentially a palatial, villa-style bungalow. The same beach-chic style and design pervades, just at a grander scale with a separate king master bedroom. Light wood closets and vanities lead down a long hallway to a stately bathroom complete with a deep soaking tub. At the far end, glass doors swing open to a colossal outdoor shower encircled by stone walls and trees for privacy. Sliding glass doors off both the master bedroom and living room lead to a grassy backyard outfitted with private plunge pool and two lounge seating areas.
On my plate
The hotel’s restaurant, Restaurant Foc, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner overlooking the main pool with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, which are usually open to the outdoors. When you’re on an island vacation, nothing beats a bountiful breakfast spread of exotic fruit, fresh juices and tasty pastries. Luckily for guests, Restaurant Foc certainly delivers; both the breakfast spread and à la carte items are divine. For lunch, we often chose to dine poolside on chilled gazpacho or tasty sandwiches without ever having to leave our daybed. Come dinnertime, Restaurant Foc’s upscale style emerges with a fine selection of meats and fish cooked in an impressive open-fire grill. To change things up for an evening, guests can also stroll over to Can Simoneta for dinner on their gorgeous terrace next door.
I wish I could take home…
One of the poolside Balinese day beds, the breakfast spread recreated each morning and the little mint-green Vespa you can rent for the day.
Set near the main pool, Pleta de Mar’s spa is a small, tranquil oasis. The stone building comprises a treatment room for two, sauna and steam room. Outside, a dark-coloured plunge pool beckons, promising a refreshing post-treatment dip. Around the corner, white loungers sit amid a lush garden area filled with vibrant flowers and spiritual statues – perfect for a quiet nap or peaceful read.
On the green
Pleta de Mar has relationships with four golf clubs in the area: Capdepera, Pula, Son Servera and Canyamel. Guests can access any of the courses for tee time, or select from the hotel’s Golf & Boat or Golf & Wine packages.
As an adults-only property, rest and relaxation is key. Enjoy multiple pool areas and a beautiful spa, as well as the amenities found at sister property, Can Simoneta.
Costa de Canyamel is one of the most beautiful coastlines in Mallorca. Located an hour from the busy capital of Palma, the scenic northeast countryside is dotted with charming villages and beautiful beaches. Visit the Playa de Canyamel beach, which is visible from the Can Simoneta property, or head inland to medieval villages like Àrta. There’s nothing like taking in the Mallorcan coastline from the water and Pleta de Mar’s concierge will happily help arrange a fun boating trip.
Our tip would be to go sooner rather than later; as a brand new hotel, prices are sure to rise in future seasons as exposure increases.
Both pool areas are beyond dreamy; however the lower pool area lacks the same service since it’s further from the main restaurant and bar area.
While the food is outstanding, both the lunch and dinner menus could offer more casual dishes (sandwiches, wraps, tacos) and light bite options.
