For travellers who seek the finest that the world has to offer

Belmond Grand Hotel Europe, St Petersburg

Russia might be renowned for its imperial grandeur, but staying in the Avant-Garde Suites of this Belmond marvel is an education in modern art. Each of the five executive suites is an homage to a 20th-century artist with the convenience of 24-hour butler service. Tihany Design was enlisted to create the opulent new rooms, with newly commissioned artwork inspired by the artists’ original work. In the Malevich Suite this is manifested in the geometric shapes and bold colours favoured by the founder of the Suprematist movement, while the Archipenko Suite mimics the sensual curves and earthy tones of the cubist sculptor. The Rodchenko Suite is an ode to the founder of Russian constructivism in reds and white, the Lissitzky Suite honours the graphic political statements of the propagandist, and the Kandinsky Suite celebrates all that is abstract. The hotel’s Presidential Suite, the largest in St Petersburg, is also a trove of inspiration with an antique Carl Schroeder grand piano in the music room.
