Grand Hotel du Palais Royal hotel review

Grand Hotel du Palais Royal hotel review

The Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal, a small luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Paris, is a home away from home to relax in refined luxury and comfort.

Traveller: Rheanne Scott in February 2017.
Room: Palais Royal Suite
Address: 4 Rue du Valois, 75001, Paris
Best for: Refined, personalised luxury in the glamorous heart of Paris.

The Signature factor

While I’m impressed by the attention to detail throughout the hotel, from the terrific service to the floral arrangements reflecting the manicured gardens of the Palais Royal across the road, the Signature factor has got to be the spectacular views afforded by the terraces in Palais Royal and Panoramic Suites. Magic happens when you walk out to the terrace in the evening, ideally in one of the plush bathrobes with a glass of champagne in hand, to watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle in the privacy of your luxury hideaway.

The concept

The Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal is just a stone’s throw from the Louvre and across the road from the beautiful and historic Palais Royal. With interiors designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, the hotel is chic and elegant, wrapping you in private luxury from the hustle and bustle outside. It is also part of an 18th-century building, with aspects of it holding a historical designation, including the façade. Some of the 68 rooms and suites in the hotel feature their own balcony with stunning views of Paris and famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower and Sacré Cœur. Throughout the hotel, fresh flowers and plants greet you as a nod to the stunning Palais Royal gardens on its doorstep. You can also indulge your senses at Le Lulli RestaurantLounge Bar and Carita Spa.

The Clefs d’Or Concierge can also help you with everything from booking restaurant reservations to theatre tickets to key sights and attractions in Paris – nothing is too much trouble.

First impressions

I felt like royalty from the moment I arrived at this beautiful hotel. An attentive doorman was waiting to open the door to my taxi, sheltering me from the downpour of rain outside with an umbrella overhead and whisked me inside. I received a warm welcome from the staff on reception and concierge, who checked me in quickly while also explaining all the amenities and services available.

The room

I stayed in the Palais Royal Suite, which took my breath away as soon as the door opened. When you step inside, you are greeted by a plush chaise longue and small terrace overlooking the courtyard, and a staircase leading up to the rest of the suite. As I walked upstairs, I took in the warm and welcoming bedroom; chic, modern bathroom of glass and marble; and inviting living room with a walk-out terrace. I actually felt happy that it was stormy outside so that I could change into the cosy bathrobe and relax in my mini palace in the heart of Paris.

The suite is on the 7th floor (split over two floors) and has private access. The view from the living room looks out to Opéra Garnier and Sacré Cœur Basilica, as well as looking over the Palais Royal and street below where you can watch the world go by.

The jaw-dropping bathroom is all glass, light and marble, with a double sink, deep bathtub with a lovely window view, and separate shower stall. Luxurious Atelier Cologne products are provided, as well as thoughtful touches including vanity and dental kits. Make a cup of coffee with your Nespresso machine and walk out to one of two private terraces and take in views of the city (including Montmartre, the Paris Opera House, Eiffel Tower and Louvre) or courtyard.

Top suite

The Panoramic Suite is the jewel in this hotel’s crown, located on the 7th (and top) floor. As the name of the suite suggests, the views allow you to gaze out over Paris and its most famous landmarks. Accessible by private lift, you can relax in your living or dining rooms, private terrace with loungers, a table and chairs, and put your head down on the king-size bed. Enjoy a relaxing bath in the deep bathtub in your marble bathroom. Start your morning before heading down to enjoy breakfast by brewing a tasty Nespresso coffee in the comfort of this suite.

On my plate

The buffet breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant, Le Lulli, is a delicious spread of freshly baked croissants and pastries, hot food, fruit and yoghurt. It will set you up for a great start to the day.

After a day of exploring Paris, pop into the hotel’s cosy Lounge Bar for some tea and pastries. Or enjoy a masterfully mixed cocktail or tasty bite to eat, open from 11am to 11pm. Even better, enjoy the Champagne Bar, where you can choose from over 30 different selections.

At Le Lulli Restaurant – housed inside a winter garden flooded with light – enjoy exquisite French cuisine by executive chef Clément Le Norcy, trained by Michelin-starred head chefs François Adamski and Michel Portos.

I wish I could take home…

Spa life

I enjoyed a wonderful hour-long massage at the Carita Spa. Part of the personalised luxury was the fact that treatments can be requested until late in the evening. After arriving on a Friday evening during a storm after a long week, I rang the Concierge who arranged a massage for later in the evening, which was divine. The spa features a large Turkish bath, two treatment rooms, a beauty salon (including hairdressing and nail services), and wide menu of services, as well as a fitness room with state-of-the-art exercise equipment and personal training. Carita products and Kure Bazaar nail polish can be purchased on site.

You can enjoy the services of the spa even if you aren’t a guest at the hotel; however, access to the fitness centre and hammam is reserved for the guests of the Carita Spa and Hotel.

Staying in

With its proximity to so many terrific things to do and experience, you don’t need to stay in to entertain yourself. However, you can keep up with your exercise routine at the fitness centre, enjoy a delicious meal at Le Lulli Restaurant, cocktail at the Lounge Bar, or indulge in a luxurious spa treatment at the Carita Spa.

Stepping out

The Grand Hôtel du Palais Royal has a coveted position in Paris, with so many things to do and see in easy walking distance, including:

  • Famous monuments and sites: Palais Royal with its beautifully landscaped gardens and black-and-white podiums,Jardin des Tuileries and the Comédie-Française theatre
