Gilberton Outback Retreat in far North Queensland is an exclusive private luxury retreat located on an 88,000-acre working cattle station.

The retreat is owned and operated by graziers Rob & Lyn French and their family and offers guests a chance to experience the Outback region of Australia while staying in five-star luxury.

Unplug, unwind and recharge on the 7th generation working cattle station in the stunning goldfields country of Gilberton. Gilberton is rich with natural assets including Aboriginal artefacts and rock art, natural granite rock formations, gold panning as well as an abundance of native flora and wildlife.

The staff at Gilberton Outback Retreat tailor your experience entirely to your needs. All activities, meals and tours are inclusive, so all you need to do is choose your adventure or simply just soak up the tranquillity.

Perched on the bluff overlooking the Gilbert River, the retreat offers the ultimate in understated luxury. Built from local stone and timber and hosting a pillow-topped king bed and luxurious bathtub you will have uninterrupted panoramic views of the surrounding rugged landscape.

The retreat has a fully self-contained kitchen, where you can enjoy your breakfast hamper, tea, coffee and snacks at any time of the day.

There are no phones, television or internet available allowing you to truly escape, relax and digital detox.

The retreat is open to the elements and a mosquito net is provided for comfort.  Power on Gilberton Station is fully solar-powered and torches are supplied should the power go off for any reason.

Dining at Gilberton Outback Retreat has a focus on ‘paddock to plate’, meaning they use nothing by locally sourced ingredients.

The nightly rate includes all your meals. Should you have any dietary requirements, advise Gilberton Outback Retreat at the time of booking so they may prepare accordingly.


Guests may have a cooked breakfast delivered to them. Alternatively, you can cook breakfast in your self-contained kitchen with local ingredients delivered to your door.


Depending on the tours chosen, lunch can be out on the tours or back at the station.

Guests are invited to join the family at the main homestead or they can opt to have dinner delivered to the retreat at an agreed time.

Immerse yourself in station life or settle in with nature. Simply choose from the variety of tour and experiences on offer.


Discover the pristine and well-preserved Aboriginal Art at Gilberton. Or walk the Chinese History trail to learn about their connection and contribution to the early days of Gilberton. On your Culture Tour, you’ll get to travel hills and gullies and marvel at the nearby natural springs.


Delve into life on the farm by touring around the cattle station. You will help put supplementary feed out for the cattle or even get to train young cattle if you happen to visit during mustering season. On this tour, you’ll discover Gilberton’s diverse landscapes, flora and fauna.


Rewind to 1869 – the year that gold was discovered in the Gilberton region. Guests on the Fossicking Tour will explore what remains of the goldfields. Tour leaders will equip you with a metal detector or panning dish and show you techniques for finding gold. You might even find and get to keep your own piece of golden treasure.
