The best of Bali’s buzz yet blissfully boutique: Alila Seminyak Bali

Mixing the best of Bali with the sophistication that draws the Seminyak crowds, Alila Seminyak Bali offers a refined and relaxing retreat that radiates tropical escape.

Traveller: Cathy Wagstaff
Room: Seminyak Suite
Address: Jalan Taman Ganesha, No. 9 Petitenget, Kerobokan, Bali, Indonesia
Date: November 2022
Price range: from $169 (Deluxe) to $509 for the Seminyak Suite
Best for: A boutique feel hotel in the centre of Bali’s vibrant village of Seminyak

Set on a beach on Bali’s southwest coast, Alila Seminyak Bali is close to all of Seminyak’s ambience – that blend of Bali bustle with a cosmopolitan style of life. Around 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport (though it can take up to two hours depending on traffic), 25 minutes to Canggu or 1 hour and 20 minutes to Ubud.

Within a short walk you can find

Seminyak’s shopping streets have high-end designer boutiques, art and antique galleries, and eateries – from fine dining to chic cafes like Ku De Ta, La Lucciola and Potato Head, that is just next door. The popular Jalan Raya Seminyak shopping street is 20 minutes by car.

Claim to fame

Alila means “surprise” in Sanskrit, and the team aim to do just that. With a focus on local cuisine, culture and experiences weaved into your stay. The hotel design has a crafted artisanship feel and is incredibly chic, yet has a boutique feel that is hard to find in many establishments.

The showstopper

From its beachfront location that draws the Indian Ocean breeze to the sense of space, from the high ceiling and open-air lobby on arrival, that weaves the elements of nature into the design. Alila Seminyak Bali is a stunner. Its sleek contemporary rooms boast sea or terrace views across nine types of accommodation – including one sensational 811-square-metre penthouse. A wood and white colour pallet in the 176 rooms and suites create a casual yet elevated luxury feel.

The room

My Seminyak Suite was a one-bedroom abode, light and airy, with space in spades (all 117 sqm of it). Floor-to-ceiling windows double as sliding doors that open onto an oversized private balcony with unobstructed ocean views and a neatly positioned daybed. In the bedroom, a King bed with crisp white linen and Zen-inspired interior decor from the wood-panelled walls to soft textile tones in shades of white and brown. An enormous bathroom with shower and its highlight – a freestanding bath –  overlooks the beach. A separate living room with a working desk was large enough for a colleague and myself to get stuck into work – with a great view.

Amenity game

Own brand, Alila Living, bath products are Balinese-inspired and community-driven, based on all-natural, organic recipes for the skin. Free from synthetic nasties and artificial colour or fragrance. The range comes in massage oils, bath salts, body milk, facial toners, and even organic volcanic soap. All which you can buy from the in-hotel boutique.

Beyond the rooms

Five swimming pools are jotted around the grounds, from the adults-only Serene Pool to a family-friendly one or the ultra-Party Pool. Many with sun loungers neatly placed within diving distance. Seasalt and the Beach Bar are for dining (24-hour in-room is also available). While Spa Alila offers Asian-inspired treatments, plus there’s a state-of-the-art gym and Alila Living boutique.

Staying in

The Beach Bar is a breezy spot to unwind any time. Be it on a daybed or armchair, with an aperitif. From fresh juice to a custom cocktail with bar food bites like wood-fired pizza and Mediterranean-inspired snacks. All to the backdrop of the waves and live music.

Seasalt is ideal for a more substantial meal for Balinese and Japanese flavours. If you are feeling active, the spa offers a range of yoga and meditation classes to find your centre.

Dish to dine for

Inspired by its spectacular oceanfront setting, Seasalt is a seafood destination. On the menu is an array of local wild-caught and sustainably harvested seafood prepared with Balinese and Japanese flavours by Chef Vivian Vitalis. Dishes are seasoned with traditional organic Kusamba sea salt from East Bali – hence the venues name. Using centuries-old traditions of producing this 100% natural salt by sun and wind evaporation.

On the palate, the whole snapper baked in aromatic salt is a sensible main to enjoy the sheer quality of the seafood. With a side of baked potatoes in aromatic sea salt, smoked cream, mustard, pickled shallot and a touch of dill. If you prefer more spice, a plate of Udang Bakar Jimbaran will satisfy – grilled prawn with tomato sambal, lime, and a lemongrass shallot dressing. The Signature Menu is a four-course feast crafted by Chef Vitalis if you can’t decide.

Stepping out

Seminyak is a buzzing Bali village with food and fashion en masse on your doorstep. Mama San by Will Meyrick is one of the best restaurants in the area where I had an exceptional dinner feasting on their Asian fusion dishes.

Beyond the village, hire a driver to take in the ‘new cool’ of Canggu with its modern dining and quieter village feel. Or ask the Concierge to create a tour – from a shopping day to uncovering the best cultural attractions. Bali’s gorgeous and glamorous southwest coast is also close – a drive down to Uluwatu and its temples are worth the drive.

The family factor

The Beach Suite is ideal for families. With its king bedroom, two separate living rooms, a dining area, and a massive balcony with breathtaking Indian Ocean views across 177 sqm. With a family-friendly pool, easy access to the beach, and the resort’s open spaces, make Alila Seminyak Bali a great family choice.

If only

I could have stayed longer… the in-suite office set up with working desk, and those incredible views, deserved more of my time.

I wish I could take home

One of the beanbags on the Beach Bar deck. Oversized and ideal for sinking into – ideally with an Alila Spritz in hand. A fruity concoction of citrus gin, passionfruit and Prosecco.
