Out-of-this-world luxpeditions: Africa
18. The edge of the Sahara with Momentum Adventure
From a 19th-century Kasbah on the edge of the Sahara Desert, you’ll explore a mud brick city, drive a Predator X-18 buggy through the desert, and camp out around the campfire before exploring the Atlas Mountains by foot, horse or e-bike. A hot-air balloon ride over Marrakech is a fine finale.
19. Climb one of the Seven Summits with Adventure Consultants
Climbing Kilimanjaro, one of the Seven Summits, has long been a favoured bucket list item, but doing so in five-star comfort gives the idea all the more appeal. On the ascent you’ll stay in comfortable camps with heated mess tents and sleep in walk-in tents with beds. On summit day, you’ll set off at midnight for Uhuru Peak to watch the sun come up. The trip has an optional safari extension to three of Tanzania’s national parks.
20. Meet the gorillas of Bwinda, Uganda with Abercrombie & Kent
The gorillas of Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are both rare and endangered, so the chance to see them in the wild is a pretty remarkable opportunity. It will take two days to trek through the forest from the Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp to the area where four gorilla families reside. The trek is steep and densely forested, but seeing the gorillas play and forage will make it well worthwhile. Back at the camp, you’ll sleep in one of eight spacious tents with ensuites.
